When you have missing teeth, there are numerous options to help replace them. Many people opt for full or partial dentures because of their ease of use—they’re removable and are a wonderful solution for those wanting to improve their bite, speech, and appearance.

Some people choose to use denture adhesive for a variety of reasons, even though it’s not always necessary. Are you considering it? Read on as we discuss signs you may need it and tips for using denture adhesive.

What is Denture Adhesive?

Denture adhesives are powders, wafers, strips, or creams that help temporarily attach full or partial dentures to your gums. Some users claim that the adhesives maximize their satisfaction with dentures because it helps enhance retention and stability. Of course, the benefits depend on the needs of each patient.

Signs You Need Denture Adhesive

Do You Frequently Use Your Facial Muscles?

Well-fitted dentures should not require any help staying in place, so denture adhesive is only used as an added sense of security. People who use their facial muscles more often than others (singers, public speakers, teachers, athletes, etc.) are most likely to benefit from this product. If you would like to increase the strength and hold of your dentures, then you may want to consider using adhesives.

Do Your Dentures Slip Towards the End of the Day?

Even though a film of saliva is all that’s needed to hold dentures in place, dental adhesive can be used as an extra layer of protection to keep them from slipping. This is most beneficial for people who suffer from dry mouth conditions, have neurological disabilities, or are elderly.

Does Food Accumulate Between Your Denture and Gums?

Dental adhesive can also be used as a sealant to prevent food particles from sticking between the gums and dentures. This helps prevent the buildup of plaque bacteria that may lead to bad breath or other dental problems.

How Do I Use Denture Adhesive?

If you decide to use dental adhesive, make sure it’s properly applied so your dentures stay in place all day. Not sure what to do? Here are the steps for applying adhesive:

  1. Thoroughly clean your dentures by either brushing or rinsing them. Make sure they’re fully dry before you move on to the next step.
  2. Apply the adhesive to your dentures following the instructions on the packaging. Start with a small amount and avoid applying close to the edges.
  3. Carefully position the dentures, then press and firmly hold them in place for a few seconds. If adhesive overflows into your mouth, then you have used too much.

To remove the adhesive, use comfortably hot water, toothpaste, and a soft-bristled toothbrush to remove any residue from your gums, palate, tongue, and mouth. Then, thoroughly clean your dentures with a dedicated denture cleanser.

Denture adhesives are a great solution for people looking to enhance the stability and comfort of their dentures. Contact your dentist if you’re considering adhesives, and they can help you regain the confidence and security you deserve.
